Calangute is the second longest beach of Goa. It is 16 km away from the Goa’s capital Panaji. During peak season Calangute takes a Euro look because of huge foreign tourist in hotel, bar, market or in the beach. It happens only because of the huge commercialization of the Calangute Beach. Indian people make fun that young guys can discover themselves in Europe if they go to Calangute at this time. Under Colorful beach umbrellas in rows the lazing beauty of the travelers give the young Indians a glimpse of the real European beach atmosphere. The scenic beauty of the beach and the facilities, together with the friendly behavior of the Goans has made Calangute Beach one of the top destination to the tourist visiting Goa.
Calangute beach is famous for sun bathing and water sports. Like Anjuna beach it was also discovered by the hippies in the 60’s.The semicircle fringe of Coconut palm trees and the golden color of the sand together with all cosmopolitan facilities of the coast have made Calangute the “Queen of Beaches” of Goa. You will find all sort water sports in Calangute beach. If you are adventurous then go for any of the sea sports like para sailing, water surfing, water skiing or banana and bump rides and enjoy great thrilling. There are some boat operators who offer dolphin spotting trips, island trips. If you are not adventurous than spreading on sandy beach tan yourself or go swimming. Calangute is a safe place to swim though one should be aware of the under current during low tide. Watch the sun dip as you laze on the beach chair or on the swinging net. If you don’t like much crowd then go away from the beach front area to the north or to south where you can enjoy loneliness. You may find the local fisherman hauling nets during high tide or the rows of idle fishing boats in the end areas. There are hundreds of sea food stall in the beach side serving variety of sea fish dishes. Try the sizzling prawns or the giant lobsters. If you are a vegetarian then you have option also. Nightlife of Calangute is not vibrant like that of Anjuna. Very few bars remain open after 10 pm. Beach parties are occasional and bar services are limited in hotels. If you want to enjoy the night life then move to Anjuna. You can visit St. Alex Church. It is of four hundred years old and famous for its magnificent dome and towers. If you love art then visit the Kerkar Art Gallery which displays art works of the Indian artists. It also arranges Indian music night for the tourist.
